    The Friends Executive Board opted to make no purchases, as a result of deciding to re-structure their purchasing program.

  • 2009

    The correspondence archives from the 1962 World Science Fiction Convention, as an addition to Rare Books and Special Collections, was purchased by the Friends. It includes extensive correspondence from the planning of the WorldCon where Robert Heinlein won his Hugo Award for Strangers in a Strange Land, with writers like Isaac Asimov (in which he is asked to make a silly speech about the Importance of Pinching Derrieres), Robert Heinlein (talking about his wife's health problems), Theodore Sturgeon, Alfred Hitchcock's people, Ray Bradbury donating a manuscript for auction, Forrest Ackerman, and a whole lot of other people.

    An additional $5000 was designated by the Board for the Southeast Asia Collection, for use at the discretion of the collection's curator. All selected items were designated by the library's Expensive Purchases Committee.

    The Friends of the NIU Libraries used the proceeds from their endowment to fund the renovation of the Scholar's Den on the first floor of the Main Library.

  • 2006

    The first edition of James Weldon Johnson's Fifty Years & Other Poems, (1917), autographed by Johnson. This title, a nice addition to the African American Collection by the civil rights activist and poet, commemorates the Emancipation Proclamation, and is *very* scarce (there were only 110 copies printed of this signed, limited edition).

    The Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics(14 vols); Elzevier; for the main reference collection. This encyclopedia was requested by the English, Foreign Languages, Communications, Communicative Disorders, and Anthropology Departments.

  • 2005

    The Friends helped the library celebrate the acquisition of its 2 Millionth Volume by contributing monies towards the purchase of the Chicago Tribune (Historical) Newspaper Database. This database offers full-text and full-image articles for the Tribune dating back to the 19th century, including digital reproductions of every page from every issue--cover to cover--in downloadable PDF® files. When the project is complete the coverage will span from 1849 to 2001.

    Eight different medieval illuminated manuscript leaves ranging in years from about 1150 to 1524 A.D. were purchased by the Friends over 2 years.
