Welcome to Special Collections and Archives
The Special Collections and Archives (SCA) Department at Founders Memorial Library is open Monday-Thursday from 9-12 and 1-4 in Founders Memorial Library Room 403 during the library’s standard operating hours while NIU classes are in session. These hours are subject to change, but access to SCA collections, services, and spaces beyond the posted hours may be accommodated as needed with sufficient advance notice.
The SCA consists of two main collecting units: the Rare Books and Special Collections (RBSC) and the Regional History Center and University Archives (RHCUA). Within this scope our facilities house materials related to a diverse range of subject areas and research topics, including American Popular Culture, 18th and 19th Century Literature, Science Fiction and Fantasy, Northern Illinois regional history and culture, and the history of Northern Illinois University.
