Who we are

Library Reference & Research Services

In addition to our master’s degrees in Library Science, faculty librarians have additional advanced degrees and experience in other disciplines. Among the many things we can help you with are refining your topic; selecting appropriate resources to consult; building effective search strategies in those database resources; evaluating the results of your searches; and determining how best to incorporate them into your research projects. The Subject Specialists enjoy assisting undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty and staff in person when the University Libraries is open, by chat or text during business hours via the Ask-A-Librarian box on our homepage, or by personal appointment via phone, Teams, or other mutually agreed upon format.

University Writing Center

We brainstorm with you, encourage you and offer constructive feedback as you perfect your writing project. We provide a safe place for all members of the NIU community to practice writing and writing-related communications. We'll help you improve your essay, resume or other project and, more importantly, help you grow into a more skilled writer. Schedule your appointment today.

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Tutoring

Whether you’re struggling with a course or just need a little extra help with homework, we provide a variety of free tutoring service options to meet your needs. You will be matched with an advanced NIU student who has completed specialized training and will assist you in reaching your academic goals. Individual and small group session appointments are available.
