Lightboard Studio

If you wish to produce a recording, bring two flash drives, one to store your recording and a separate flash drive containing your PowerPoint if you plan to use one.

If you wish to conduct a live lightboard session instead of or in addition to a recording, setup your live session (e.g. Zoom, Teams, or Collaborate) and distribute the link to your participants.

Select the clothing that you will wear. Choose solid colors over patterns and darker colors over lighter ones, but avoid black. Do not wear clothing with logos or words as these will be displayed backwards. Practice your presentation before scheduling an appointment.

1. Bring your flash drive(s) and any materials needed for your recording or live lightboard session.
2. On the side of the lightboard station facing the door, press the white On button to turn the system on. The lightboard lights will turn on, as well as the camera, confidence monitor (bottom), and PC/overlay monitor (top).
3. [Optional] Insert the flash drive with your PowerPoint presentation in the computer on the right side of the lightboard. Load your presentation on the top screen using the mouse and keyboard, then play your slideshow in full screen mode, displaying any overlays over the confidence monitor. Control the overlay presentation using the arrow keys on the keyboard.
4. Insert the flash drive for storing your recording in the one button device on the lightboard table.  The LED will pulse indicating ready to record, press the red record button to begin recording.
5. When finished, press the red button again to stop the recording.
6. After about 5 seconds, you may remove the flash drive, your recording is now stored in MP4 format on your flash drive.
7. If used, close PowerPoint on the top monitor and retrieve your presentation flash drive.
8. [Optional] You may use the PC to review your recording and/or upload to OneDrive by plugging your recording flash drive into the PC.
9. When finished with your session, follow the clean up instructions in this FAQ and press the Off button to power the entire system off. Do not power down the PC.

4. Open the live session (Zoom, Teams, or Collaborate) and set the camera and microphone selection to the BlackMagic Device.
5. Once configured, begin recording by pressing the red button. The recording will start immediately.
6. When finished, press the red button again to stop the recording.
7. The recording will stop, process, and copy to the flash drive. This process takes approximately 15 seconds.
8. If used, close PowerPoint on the left monitor and retrieve your presentation flash drive.
9. When finished with your session, follow the clean up instructions in this FAQ and press the Off button to power the entire system off. Do not power down the PC.

It is important to follow the clean up instructions below carefully to ensure a clean work surface for the next appointment and to prevent damage to the lightboard.

1. You should be able to clean the lightboard glass with a dry microfiber towel from the supply table in the Studio room. This may leave a small amount of ghosting on the presenter side of the glass, but is generally not visible in recordings.
2. If necessary, you may use a small amount of foaming glass cleaner with the microfiber towel by spraying directly on the towel and then wiping the board. Be sure to dry completely and clean away residue. Do not use any other glass cleaner, sanitizer, paper towels, or other materials to clean the glass.
3. Use sanitizing wipes on all touch surfaces including the keyboard, mouse, and lightboard table. Do NOT use sanitizer or sanitizing wipes on the lightboard glass.

Most recommendations on video for learning include keeping videos short - between five and fifteen minutes - with multiple short videos as opposed to a single long video. Other than this recommendation, the Lightboard Studio allows you to record as long as you would like, within the capacity of your flash drive. On average, ten minutes of video requires 1 GB of storage.

In addition to this requirement, typical flash drives can only save individual files of up to 4 GB, which limits you to approx. fourty minutes of continuous recording. If you need a longer video, your flash drives will need to be formatted properly (exFAT).

Lightboard Studio provides out-of-the-box functionality. You are not required to edit your videos. If you do need to edit them, and you use a Mac, we recommend using iMovie.
